Happy White Cane Day!

In honor of White Cane Day I revised “White Cane in Hand,” written here as a poem.  It’s actually in the beginning stages of being made into a children’s book with illustrations and all!  For my original parody with photographs, please see White Cane in Hand.

Do you like white cane in hand?

I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Would you use it here or there?

I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Would you use it at a park?
Would you use it in the dark?

I do not like it at a park.
I do not like it in the dark.
I do not like it here or there.
I do not like it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Would you use it down the hall?
Would you use it in a mall?

Not down the hall.
Not in a mall.
Not at a park.
Not in the dark.
I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Would you?  Could you?
With some bling?
Try it!  Try it!
What a thing!

I would not, could not with some bling.

You may like it.
You will see.
You may like it
to feel free?

I would not, could not to feel free!
Not with some bling!  You let me be.
I do not like it down the hall
I do not like it in a mall.
I do not like it at a park.
I do not like it in the dark.
I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

A street!  A street!
A street!  A street!
Could you, would you
to cross a street?

Not on a street!  Not to feel free!
Not with some bling. You let me be!
Not down the hall.
Not in a mall.
Not at a park.
Not in the dark.
I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Say!
On a plane?
Here on a plane!
Would you, could you on a plane?

I would not, could not on a plane.

Would you, could you to find a seat?

I would not, could not to find a seat

Not on a plane.  Not on the street.
Not with some bling. Not to feel free.

I do not like it, don’t you see?

Not down the hall.
Not in a mall.
Not at a park.
Not in the dark.
I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it anywhere.
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am.

Would you, could you as a limbo stick?

I could not, would not as a limbo stick.

Could you, would you for a sword trick?

I would not, could not for a sword trick.
I will not, will not as a limbo stick
Not on a plane.  Not on the street.
Not with some bling. Not to feel free.

I do not like it, don’t you see?

I do not like it down the hall.
I do not like it at the mall.
I will not use it at a park.
I do not like it in the dark.
I would not use it here or there.
I would not use it ANYWHERE!
I do not like white cane in hand.
I do not like it, Joy I am!

You do not like it, SO you say!
Try it! Try it and you may, I say!

If you let me be,
I will try it,
so you’ll see.

…Say!
I like white cane in hand!
I do!

I like it, Joy I am!
And I would use it to do a sword trick.

And I would use it as a limbo stick.
And I will use it on a plane.  And on the street.
And with some bling. And to feel free.

It is so fun, so FUN you see!

So I will use it down the hall.
And I will use it in a mall.

And I will bring it to a park.
And I will use it in the dark.
I do so like white cane in hand. I do so like it, Joy I am!

And I will use it here and there
Say!  I will use it ANYWHERE!

I do so like white cane in hand.
I do so like it, Joy I am!

    1. Thanks! And oh my goodness, we just got back from a vacation and your book was waiting for us….we LOVE it! And your personalized letter about David made me tear up…so inspirational. I feel incredibly grateful to have “met” you.

  1. I am brand new to your sight!! So excited I have found you both. I am a now low vision person who is adjusting to wavey double vision, chronic headaches and tight muscles all around my neck area due to feeling lopsided. My one eye is strong and my weak eye varies daily.

I love your story and yes I have a cane due to not being able to see over my right shoulder and bumping into people. I am blessed as I still drive but not to often.

My one eye is strong and my weak eye varies daily. Looking for some resources as my lovely retinal doctor is coming up blank on the headaches issue? They have done five surgeries and have now decided to hold off on a sixth surgery to perhaps relieve a retinal pucker currently. The solution they gave me was to cover my eye for the time being.

Thank you so much for being here and sharing your story, not sure if you have a resources page I can be directed to?
    Many thanks,
    Maria

    1. Welcome Maria! I’m glad that you have a white cane and that you are working on adjusting to vision loss. So sorry to hear that you have been dealing with headaches as well. I have dealt with my fair share of vertigo over the past few years! We actually do not have a resources section on this page but that’s a great idea and we will look at adding one! I would definitely check out Hadley resources if you haven’t already! Linking it below!
